This rare, first edition and privately published book, an Illustrated Negro Spiritual, is entirely with 40 full page B&W drawings and more by Allan Rohan Crite, African American Artist and Centenarian. Allan Crite is particulary notable for his paintings of Boston neighborhood scenes (Parade on Hammond St., etc) which are now highly prized for their historical value. He was one of the first few Academically trained or professionally recognized African American Artists recruited to the PWAP Artists Project of the 30's...he is also noted for his religious renderings as in this inspiring and moving potrayal of the Negro Spiritual, a "translation from the musical rhythm to the visual rhthym"; Printed at the Harvard University Press, Cambridge Mass, 1944. Unpaginated 9 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches.  Very Good Condition, Ex-libris Library bookplate; Date due sheet and spine numbers; page before title page has 4 inch split at spine, 3/4" tear from outside spine;extremities of covers frayed. Boards are cloth covered.
